A few of the interesting projects funded by CMTTF over the years:
CANUCK PLACE (Vancouver, BC)
For children in terminal stages of cancer, AIDS, and muscular dystrophy, Music Therapy provided comfort when they were faced with invasive procedures, balm for their loneliness and insecurity, and distraction for their pain. Bereavement support was also provided to young people and their families.
MARYVALE ADOLESCENT AND FAMILY SERVICES (Windsor, ON)
Maryvale serves extremely disturbed, acting out, and anti-social youth, as well as those who are suicidal. Music Therapy provided release from tension and helped youth to identify and express feelings to improve their communication skills.
CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL (Winnipeg, MB)
In this pediatric hospital, Music Therapy supported children who were in pain, depressed, and isolated. Therapy was also provided for the cancer clinic, the bone-marrow transplant unit, and long-term critical care.
COOL MOVES (Regina, SK)
This research project enabled severely disabled youth and adults to access and control a variety of instrumental sounds by their physical movements picked up by electronic devices.
BURNS AND PLASTIC SURGERY UNIT, HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE (Vancouver, BC)
Music Therapy was used to assist children and adults in acute burn care recovery. Music therapists used music and imagery to decrease pain and anxiety. Rhythm was also used to promote movement which is very painful for those with serious burns.
AUBERGE TRANSITION (Montreal, QC)
At this shelter for abused women and their children, Music Therapy interventions included vocal and instrumental improvisation, relaxation techniques, and coping strategies.
TILLICUM HAUS NATIVE FRIENDSHIP CENTRE (Nainaimo, BC)
This pilot program served the needs of First Nations adults, traumatized in the residential schools from the 1930s until the 1970s, and their children. Music Therapy supported the healing process for those who suffered post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and those who suffered from alcohol and drug addictions.
CAMPHILL VETERAN’S MEMORIAL HOSPITAL (Dartmouth, NS)
Music Therapy programming supported veterans with physical, psychological and/or mental difficulties.
MUSIC THERAPY FOR ABUSED CHILDREN (Owen Sound, ON)
In collaboration with the Children’s Aid Society of Owen Sound, this Music Therapy grant offered a creative, supportive approach to children 6-12 who had been traumatized by physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or who had witnessed violence in their families.
MUSIC THERAPY ASSISTED CHILDBIRTH (Brantford, ON)
Music therapists teamed with other heath care professionals to research the use of music as pain management during labour and the birthing process as a reliable alternative to the use of drugs.
YUKON DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (Whitehorse, NWT)
At the Yukon Development Centre, preschool students engaged in Music Therapy sessions to improve language skills, motor movement, and social communication and interactions.
REGINA OPEN DOOR SOCIETY INC (Regina, SK)
As a part of the Newcomers in Transition Project, music therapists assisted refugees in resettlement, using Music Therapy interventions to cope with the challenges in their new environment.
